Muy Pronto Fonda Y Birrieria Jalisco

After an amazing experience at a taqueria in Baltimore I have been looking for authentic Mexican flavors in Raleigh and now I have finally stumbled upon some! Our meal was a little more expensive than what I’ve paid for Mexican in the past, but I did go order crazy! I ordered nachos – they’re standard with white cheese. Then two marinated pork soft tacos and a carne asada chalupa. The chalupa was like a regular taco but filled with some cheese, sour cream, and inside of a cornmeal pancake, like an arepa. The meats were unique, with the pork sporting a bit of a vinegar tang and the steak having a roasted flavor, with crispy chunks. I also enjoyed the soft tortillas, made with real masa. It was way too much food for me, I should have only gotten two items. I also enjoyed swigging my Mexican Coke in a glass bottle, made with real sugar.

According to chowhounds, the posole and the goat chili stew called Birria items are the must-try specialties. And if you’re brave you can try beef head tacos or tripe tacos. If you’re not fluent in Spanish, ask for the English menu so you can know what you’re ordering.

From NY With Love

Closest thing to a Jewish deli I’ve seen since I’ve been here in Raleigh. Good sandwiches, also serve breakfasts and delectable selection of desserts. They even have chopped liver, knishes, “properly steamed pastrami” according to chowhounders, as well as rugelach, smoked fish and matzoh ball soup. What’s missing? A cranky attitude, which surprisingly I sometimes miss. In boca you could always witness the retirees and waitstaff yelling at each other over something. Anyhow, I’d like to stop back here with my long island-born hubby.

New York Bagels & Deli

February 27

3 out of 5 stars

This is a good place for when you need a quick bagel fix and the squishy soft bagels at Bruegger’s won’t do. It’s disorganized, the ladies who work there always seem confused, the coffee sucks, but they have the closest thing to a NY bagel you’ll find in the area, and you can get the tasty lox bagel. Alternately you could stop by for some of their new york cookies or pastries. On weekends here there is a line and you may or may not find a seat to sit and eat your bagel.
