Las Olas Cafe

3 out of 5 stars

Las Olas Cafe is on the south side of Las Olas, hidden back behind most of the storefronts. They have a cute outside terrace area and an inside area that is decorated to also look like it is outside, with a streetlamp and flowers in windowsills. The authenticity wanes because the flowers are fake and sprinkled with white christmas lights. The darkness makes it hard to read the menu, but it's romantic.

Entrees range from $15-$35. I had a sea scalop and shrimp pasta with a grand marnier sauce. I couldn't really taste the grand marnier, and the sauce was thin so it didn't coat the noodles well. I woulde have chosen an angelhair pasta instead of fettuccini in order to better coat the noodles. The first half of the dish lacked flavor because the sauce sat on the bottom. The scallops were perfectly done, but the shrimp were overdone.

My husband ordered a Mahi Mahi, crusted with walnut, with a apple cinnamon topping. It came with steamed veggies and mashed potatoes, which were good, but the fish itself and toppings were rather bland.

Our bruchetta appetizer was okay, nothing special.. There was too much topping on tiny peices of bread so it was a mess to eat.

Wine selection was good but next time we'll spend out $80 elsewhere. What was confusing was that we had been here before and had a wonderful meal. We had the fried goat cheese appetizer, and some other dishes which were spectacular. We weren't nearly as impressed this time. Service has been good both times, however. If yougo, call for reservations.  This small cafe gets packed on weekends.
