Smashburger

The kind folks at Smashburger asked me to stop by and check out their latest location which recently opened on Falls of Neuse Rd in North Raleigh. While I am not a burger expert, I do always appreciate yummy fast-casual food, especially when they have healthy options, so I brought my husband and the lil’ guy over there to check it out.

We have so many burger places that have come into the Triangle in the fast few years, including Burger Fi, Five Guys, Elevation Burger, Bad Daddy’s Burger Bar, Corbett’s and Bull City Burgers and Brewery. These have joined our classic burger joints like Char-Grill and Cook Out. Generally my favorite has been Burger Fi or Only Burger, but these guys have no healthy options. I’m happy that Smashburger has not only chicken sandwiches and black bean burgers, but also fresh salads topped with grilled or crispy chicken breast.

The burgers are offered in a number of different varieties and with different types of buns, including a gluten-free option. Hubby ordered the Avocado Smashburger, I tried the spinach cucumber and goat cheese chicken sandwich, and my son chose the kid’s cheeseburger meal.

My husband’s burger was good, but fairly standard. It was a relatively thin patty cooked to a medium well doneness, so there was no red inside. Smash burger says that they smash the burgers down as they cook them on the flat top which seals in the juices. I’m not sure whether that claim bears true, I didn’t find the burger extraordinarily juicy. I did enjoy the bun and the fact that there is not so much juice that your bun gets all soggy.

I really enjoyed my chicken sandwich, which was a thin but tender cutlet that was easy to eat. The cucumber and goat cheese option brought the sandwich to 410 calories. I was surprised that the goat cheese adds less calories than the other cheese choices. All the veggies on top of the burger were super fresh. I chose veggies frites on the side of the sandwich, which are lightly flash fried. They were yummy and a nice alternative to fries or a side salad for another 220 calories. You can find the nutritional info of all the offerings right here.

My son enjoyed his cheeseburger and yummy fries, which are nicely seasoned with salt and pepper and they are thin and crispy.

I was tempted to try one of the milkshakes, especially the salted caramel or PB&J shake, but I’m being good on my diet right now!
I recommend you give Smashburger a try, they have healthy and sinful options for everyone in your family (or work group).
