The Pit

3 out of 5 stars

I’ll admit I had high expectations going in – this place was featured on TV. My confessional continues: I don’t have much experience with satisfying NC BBQ, other than some home-smoked pork I had at my friend Adam’s house in Charlotte. Nothing has ever come close to that experience. Especially not this one.

Nevertheless, The Pit has a great blend of modern and historic flair to the interior, plus a nice patio. Our table of 8 seemed to enjoy their food, with the most raves going to the grouper salad and the fried chicken. Ironically most agreed the pulled pork was bland and the mac and cheese was as well. I enjoyed my crispy sweet potato fries, and the homemade baked beans with a lightly flavored accompaniment. The gratis apps of hush puppies and biscuits were both a little crisp and dry. The special mojito on the menu was a disaster.

Consensus from reviewers seems to indicate that The Pit’s strengths are the apps and sides. That’s disappointing! My search continues for the ultimate BBQ pork.

  • Cool! I have never been over that way, I’ll have to check it out. Thanks!

  • When your near Reidsville (and its not a Sunday) then all you need to do find the best BBQ is drop by Short Sugar’s — sit at the Altar (er counter) and your goal will be delivered.

  • Great site.

I was not impressed with the Pit…..one of my favorite places in the Triangle is Bullock’s.. Down east it is hard to go wrong with Wilburs or Parkers. Some people swear by Bills and Kings.

  • Barbeque means different things in different parts of the country. On the south side of Chicago, if you say “barbeque” you mean “grilled” or “slow smoked” style cooking. Porkwise, ribs are king in Chicago, with Carson’s ribs being such a huge favorite, they deliver like pizza to your home all over town. In the summer, stop at practically any redlight and wave a five dollar bill. A man will run over from his smoker and “lay it on you.” Usually you get one of two things for your fiver, “slow smoked chicken” (no sauce) and a piece of bread wrapped in foil. OR “slow smoked” ribs (usually with spicey sauce) and a piece of bread. I can’t wait for summer to roll around and the smokers hit the streets… smells like summer all over Chicago. Now that’s barbeque to this yankee!
