There’s a new option for guilt-free fast casual dining opening this Monday in Cary on Kildaire Farm Rd., and I got a chance to check it out this week. Newk’s specializes in fresh salads, sandwiches, soups and pizzas in a pretty comfortable atmosphere. I would say it’s a little reminiscent of a Panera or Jason’s Deli, but easier to navigate, and with nicer floors. Floors that have a nice texture to them and you think, “hrm, is that laminate? you know what? i like it and i don’t care if it’s real. maybe i should get laminate in my house.” Yes, I think in lowercase.
I ordered a combination from the Under 600 Calories menu, the Pesto Chicken (with goat cheese) half sandwich and the Simply Salad with Sherry Vinaigrette. They were both made with very fresh veggies – I was pretty satisfied. See, mine actually looks like the photo, too.
Newk’s has this round table in the restaurant where you can help yourself to pickles, capers, croutons, breadsticks, and other sorts of condiments that they actually call “The Round Table”. Make sure to check this out when you go, the folks at the table next to us were pretty jazzed about the pickles. I’ll eat a pickle on occasion, but probably wouldn’t leave my seat for one, so I may have missed out. I also had assumed the paper-wrapped breadsticks were chopsticks. It was a long day.
Glen ordered the shrimp remoulade salad and also felt it was particularly fresh. Lil’ D ordered mac and cheese and got it in a little baking dish that helped crisp the top of the mac. He chose fruit on the side.
This seems like a great option for corporate catering or a healthy lunch or dinner, especially since you can order online.
Go check them out tomorrow – the first 50 guests to walk through the doors at 11 a.m. will be awarded a gift package of premium Newk’s items, including a gift card valid for one free entrée and drink for each week of the year. Only one set of VIP cards will be awarded per household. The next 50 guests in line will receive gift packages.
