Hummingbird Cafe

4 out of 5 stars

Hummingbird Cafe is a tiny new eatery on Broad Street in Durham, located in a shiny modern silver building which also houses some art exhibits and more to come. There are only about two tables inside and probably no more than 6 outside, so it’s best to come early before you run out of seating options. The Cafe is the latest venture from Amy Tornquist of Watt’s Grocery.

The menu has a few simple options that are well executed. I tried the mixed green salad that comes with goat cheese, cinnamon pecans, and some (small) bites of seared fish on top. It was a small salad but fantastic. After topping it off with a devil’s food cupcake with cream cheese icing, I was suitably satisfied.

The lunch menu also includes a pulled pork sandwich, fish tacos, pimiento cheese sandwich, and a roasted veggie sandwich. A few breakfast options are offered all day, like a fig and goat cheese sandwich, breakfast burrito, and of course biscuits and other breakfasty pastries.
Just try browsing this case without buying yourself a treat.

Overall, this is a great place to grab a bite, but the portions are small. It reminds me of Scratch but I felt Hummingbird does a better job with letting the freshness of the ingredients shine through, not needing to over-season. I daresay Daisycakes may have better cupcakes. But it’s really best you try them all out to be sure. Despite the small servings, this place is highly recommended.
