Hursey’s Bar-B-Q

September 27

4 out of 5 stars

I’m a novice to pulled pork, but after trying it after it was smoked for about 16 hours at a friend’s BBQ cook off, I’m looking to get repeat the experience as often as possible! I ordered a chopped BBQ sandwich with slaw and a little apple turnover. The slaw and pork were a tasty combo, with sweet and sour vinegar twang. I would have preferred a little less sauce and some more smoky flavor, but I’d like to try the pork on it’s own, unencumbered by slaw to get a better idea. In any case, the food was yummy, cheap and super fast to come out. The turnover was a nice way to finish it off. We’d definitely stop back.

Plus, Hursey’s is on the North Carolina historic BBQ trail!

Goober’s 52

July 8

4 out of 5 stars

There are a lot of weird things about this restaurant: 1) A Caribbean theme restaurant in a tiny landlocked town, 2) the name, Goobers, 3) one of the worst websites ever… I hardly know where to start. But we headed over on a recommendation from a Mt. Airy resident. The food was tasty and the decor was decent! Glen had a really good seared tuna salad and I ordered a side salad and a cup of the she crab soup. Both come with homemade dressing and were great, and we forgot about the massive thunderstorm that was going on outside as we ate. Plus we each got free watermelon slices for dessert as a 4th of July weekend bonus.

Krankies Coffee

July 8

4 out of 5 stars

We loved the space that Krankies Coffee occupies, the old brick building, the steam punk ambiance. They also get street cred get by roasting their own coffee in the shop and selling by country varietal instead of weird blends of flavors. It just felt like a place that would be fun to spend time in, and the art display in the neighboring room was fun as well. We both ordered cappuccinos to take on the road with us, which were tasty! But we felt we’ve had smoother cappuccinos.. however these were still better than starblech and had quality foam. Definitely check them out!
