Raleigh’s assortment of Mexican restaurants (at least the ones I have tried) are pretty depressing. In fact it seems like the majority of them are run by the same people, because they all offer the same menu items at a somewhat dismal quality level. But not so at Chubby’s.

Situated conveniently near Rex Hospital, Chubby’s could potentially fill up a pregnant mama who is eating for two on the way home from a childbirth class, or start a recent surgery patient on the road to ruin. Either way, there are lots of tasty options on the menu. I ordered the chimichanga with a side of black beans and yellow rice. The chimichanga was a mini version of what I’m used to getting at other places but it was just enough to fill me up, and was filled with some tender stewed beef.

It also came with some chips and access to a salsa bar which I unfortunately didn’t notice until I was done eating.

Hubs ordered the ground beef taco salad which looked abundant.

Friends we ran into also highly recommended the gordita, made up of a pillowy corn bread wrapped around the filling.

What I really liked was the wealth of taco filling options. With options from beef to portobello mushrooms or Ahi Tuna, even our vegetarian friends will be pleased. Chubby’s is a small space but packs in the patrons. Prices were reasonable and food was fresh and tasty. A recommended stop.

Happy to finally have a chance for a date night since having baby Wolfie, I arranged for some friends to meet Glen and I out at Fosters American Grille. It’s located right in Cameron Village and seemed a great place to meet up with some buddies and eat well, but not too pretentiously. I have a problem with pretension as I generally have pretty uncomplicated (but demanding) tastes.

Reviews online have varied wildly but of late Fosters has gotten some acclaim from the peanut gallery. Rumor on the grapevine is that management has changed and some original staff has been hired back which has revitalized the food and service. I have to agree!

Fosters has a broad menu so I knew everyone would be able to find something they’d enjoy and I was right. It spans salads, grilled pizza, pasta, and a selection of traditional entrees. (Menu here.) We started with a few appetizers, taking advantage of the $5 for any appetizer special that happens from 4-7pm daily. The crab dip was splendid, served with toasted flat bread. The lettuce wraps were just ok, consisting of a hoisin sauce over chicken, water chestnuts and little fried noodles. Friends also appeared to enjoy the crab cakes served over a corn succotash.

The entrees really wowed us, all served with fluffy mashed potatoes that were clearly homemade with care and lightly sauteed vegetables that were tender and not oily. I really enjoyed my short rib entree which was fall-apart tender and rich, “simmered overnight in red wine, tomatoes and garlic,” according to the menu. Hubs had the 6 ounce filet, which was perfect, and D had the rack of ribs which he enjoyed. Our lady friend was in love with her Chicken Rockefeller, a spinach and bacon stuffed chicken breast.

We fully enjoyed most everything we ordered and I look forward to returning. I also wish I had left room to try dessert. The atmosphere here is lovely whether you sit downstairs in the dining room or bar area, or upstairs where you’ll be outside and have a view of activity on Cameron Village streets below. I hear it turns into quite the late-night spot and they seem to have music and dancing many nights. But don’t underestimate what a delicious meal you can get at reasonable prices. Sandwiches from $8 and entrees from $14.

A wonderful surprise for me was the check-in special on Four Square!  We got 20% off the food!

A weath of new frozen treat shops are opening in the Raleigh area. They may prove harsh competition to our long-time favorite, Goodberry’s. Freshberry features about six flavors of yogurt each day that come with your choice of two or three toppings included in the price. They also have neat-looking popsicles that are all under 100 calories, and a selection of smoothies. The topping selection includes a wide variety of freshly diced fruits as well as some traditional candy toppings.

While a healthy dessert sounds like a good idea, I didn’t end up going that route. I gave a taste to the coconut frozen yogurt, which was tasty with a bit of a tang to it. But I ended up ordering Decadent Dark Chocolate yogurt with oreo as a topping. However it’s awesome to have the option to look at the nutritional content and to order something healthier (they have a no-sugar added vanilla in addition to the healthier pops) when you have health issues to watch out for. I haven’t been to Pinkberry so I can’t compare, but I did feel this was some decandent yogurt! Still, Goodberry’s still has a place in my heart (and stomach) with their rich custard.

Peppers looks like it is a slick franchise operation which has opened in the completely new shopping centers at the intersection by Davis and Morrisville Carpenter Rd. However it seems to be locally owned, offering bread from La Farm and homemade soups and roasted meats. And the quality was evident when I visited for a quick lunch.

I tried the roast beef and brie sandwich with caramelized onions on a french hard roll. I chose fresh fruit for my side (potato salad, pasta salad or coleslaw are the other options). The meal was decidedly fresh and satisfying. Roast beef was perfectly done, rare and tender. The roll was perfect – crispy and chewy outside with a tender interior. I also enjoyed a Boylan Black Cherry soda with my meal. In fact the only complaint that I can muster is that the prices aren’t necessarily recession-friendly. However the quality is worth the extra buck or two! Lunch for two came out to $17, and we enjoyed our meal sitting on the sunny patio.

I had a chip on my shoulder about Crabtree Tavern because I have been so often disappointed by “upscale” taverns, including the Oxford. But it turned out to be a perfect lunch outing for the family, seated on the patio with our new baby. It has a suprisingly green view, considering that this restaurant is situated between two hotels and the parking garage of Crabtree Mall. It has the benefit of being slightly up the hill and nestled amongst trees.

I ordered the Guinness Chili , which was fantastic.. you could taste the Guinness for sure in the ground beef as well as other spices and the black beans. Also a house side salad on the side for an extra $2, with fresh cherry tomatoes, baby greens, red onion and fresh parmesan.

Hubs had the Californian turkey burger, which was moist and flavorful. I didn’t even realize it was a turkey burger until he told me later. The burger came on grilled fresh-baked wheat bread with avocado, feta, salsa and cilantro aoli.

Ellen had one of the grilled chicken breast sandwiches, which she raved about due to the seasoning on the chicken breast and the smoky flavor imparted by the wood grill. She got some sweet potato fries on the side, which are always fun.

The service was a little slow, but we couldn’t complain for two reasons – 1) we were the only ones on the patio and 2) the menu asks that you be patient as all items are made to order. At least we were warned in advance. Baby Devin enjoyed his time out on the patio with us and we can’t wait to go back and sample more of the food at the Crabtree Tavern.

Lettuce Head is a new arrival to the Kroger shopping center at Creedmoor and Strickland. A simple family-run place, they specialize in salad (of course!) but also offer anything you’d like to have in a wrap. All salads and wraps are $6.45, unless you opt for extra premium ingredients. We love to order the California salad, with grilled chicken, bacon, avocado, romaine, tomato, mozzarella and ranch dressing. The ingredients are all super fresh and you’ll feel great that you are eating healthy. (Although if you feel naughty you can also supplement the meal with a brownie or some kettle chips.)

Service is super-friendly and also kid friendly, with a little play area for kids with toys and such. One day though I came in craving something Mexican so they improvised a delicious quesadilla with my choice of ingredients using the panini press.

I’ve been to Trali Irish Pub twice now and both times really enjoyed both my meal and the atmosphere.  Once you find Trali (behind BJ’s at Brier Creek) and struggle to find parking you’ll enter a warmly lit convivial environment complete with comfortable tapestried seating at traditional-looking wooden tables.  Weeknights this place will be buzzing with activity and it can get a bit loud, but not rowdily so when I’ve been.

One our recent visit, we enjoyed one of the appetizer specials of the day, fresh mozzarella with tomato and basalmic vinegar.  Friends have highly recommended the Guinness flavored mussels as well but I must admit I was also tempted by the fried camembert cheese with strawberries.  For my entree, I tried a prociutto and pea cream sauce over bowtie pasta.  It was perfect, lightly creamy and not too heavy, with thick slices of prociutto and fresh peas. Hubs tried out some baked cod from the daily specials menu as well, which he enjoyed. On a previous visit I had the cornish game hen, which was acompanied by some delicious roasted potatoes.

I don’t think you can go wrong at this friendly pub, where the attention to detail put into the décor hasn’t exceeded the attention paid to the quality of the food and the preparation of it. Stop in for a drink and find out what the new specials are.

My expectations were high for Coquette because 1) I went for brunch, my favorite meal of the day and 2) I had heard so many raves. But unfortunately the experience fell short. In fact I think my favorite part of the meal was the fresh bread that came out with our beverages.

The decor is nice, a simple checkerboard floor, a very open and sunny environment, and bistro style seating, with a large rustic bread station in the middle. We were seated and our serviec was not great from the beginning. The waiter seemed hung over and wasn’t really able to answer our questions about the menu. I ordered the banana and nutella crepe and hubs ordered the eggs florentine, asking for his sauce on the side. He also ordered the soup of the day, cauliflower soup.

My crepe was tasty, but pretty small. I am sure that I only got about half of a banana’s worth, if that, inside of it. Of course the nutella and roasted hazelnuts sprinkled on top were good, but I expected more in quantity and in quality. Presentation of course was lovely, as you can see. Hub’s cauliflower soup bowl contained about 1/2 cup of soup for $6. Even if it was the most fabulous soup in creation (it wasn’t), that amount for that price is hard to deal with. His eggs florentine came with sauce on top though he asked for it on the side. As our waiter delivered it and placed it before him he said “Oh you wanted the sauce on the side… I saw them putting it on so I asked them to only put on a little.” Umm.. either you asked them to put it on the side or you didn’t. Clearly you forgot and now you’re lying to cover it up? Just wierd. The florentine didn’t have much flavor even with the tomatoes, and the table next to us sent theirs back because it “exploded on her”. We also ordered a side of bacon, which was tasty. Given all the sides we had to order, we had to pay a hefty price for this meal and we still did not leave satisfied.

Perhaps if you give Coquette a shot for brunch try one of the Croques or a Monte Cristo. The exra carbs might help fill you up. Or maybe the other meals of the day are a better bet. Varmint Bites has a great article about their opening including some photos of the interior.

O’Malley’s Tavern is hidden in a quaint shopping center off of Glenwood Avenue, across from the Rooms to Go and just up the road from Crabtree Mall. Fellow reviewers’ descriptions of a dive bar are correct, but this is a dive bar with personality. Well-worn wooden booths welcome you on one side, and the other sports pool tables and comfortable-looking couches. Patrons seem to be made up of a come-as-you are local crowd, which is a breath of fresh air compared to many places farther down Glenwood. Speaking of fresh air, now that all bars are non-smoking it shan’t deter you from visiting this hidden gem. They even have a nice patio out front.

I actually only stopped in here for breakfast, but really did enjoy the simple meal and friendly service. The breakfast menu here is actually pretty broad, taking up two sides of a menu page. I had the country fried steak and two eggs with toast, plus choice of hash browns or oatmeal or grits for $5.75. My steak was relatively small, but quite satisfying for the price paid. Hubs had Byron’s Breakfast, consisting of two eggs, two sausage links plus wheat toast for $5. His sausage links were deliciously herby and tasted homemade. Prices are reasonable with lots of options to choose from, including corned beef hash, sweet potato sticks, yogurt, omelettes, pancakes, breakfast sandwiches, french toast and more.

Drink (including pitchers) and food specials look generous, so try them out any time of the day.

I was particularly dissappointed in my snack at Baker’s Dozen because I had been wanting to try out this hidden bakery around the corner for quite some time. All the glowing reviews had led me to believe I’d find here a wonderful snack. The bakery selection looks great, except my brownie was more than a little bit stale, and Mom’s muffin wasn’t very fresh either. For me there is no excuse for serving day-old (or more) items at full price at a bakery!
