This restaurant is attached to the lobby of the General Francis Marion, a restored 1920′s hotel. Lacking really any other options where we could find an omelette close by, we ate here, in what turned out to be the chef’s first experience making an egg white omelet! Again the stereotype about Southerners’ unhealthy eating habits rings true. In any case, the first attempt was a good one and Glen was satisfied with his asiago, onion and tomato concoction from the create your own omelet section. I went for fried green tomatoes with a sausage patty, eggs and toast, which were delightful. The whole wheat bread (hey hey had that, at least!) was freshly baked and scrumptious and the sausage and tomatoes felt very special and southern to me, though I am far from an expert on FGT’s.

Keep in mind this is probably the priciest meal you’ll find in this tiny town, but the breakfast lived up to expectations. Service on the other hand was slow as molasses. And there were only two other guests in the place!

It may not sound like it but this place is a great stop to make for breakfast. We came here for a second breakfast after hubby was unable to eat most of what was served at the bed and breakfast for breakfast. I didn’t really think ahead there. Anyhow we stopped off here and I had a biscuit with sausage gravy (white gravy) and Glen ordered a egg, toast and sausage patty special. This came out to $5 for both of us! And the sausage patty was super tasty as well as my biscuit and gravy. They were also taking tons and tons of phone orders for food for people to pick up later in the day.

Glen and I headed here for dinner on the Fourth of July on the recommendation of our friendly B&B owner, Don. He said it was a good place to grab a bite and where drinks could be had. It’s a nice looking place with comfortable seating set up inside what was at one time a hardware store in the 20′s. Glen ordered the “homemade” chicken salad sandwich and I ordered some chicken tenders. The chicken tenders were very tender, but generally were your standard frozen tender fare. They came with some tasty waffle fries. Glen’s chicken sandwich may have been homemade but it was stringy and tough chicken. Which I normally wouldn’t be too surprised by, but this particular chicken sandwich was named after someone. And the menu claimed that it was “prepared in the tradition of a renowned local hostess”. Service was just ok, it didn’t help them gain back any of the lost ground. Neither did the apple pie for dessert, which DID taste homemade but was overly sweet and heavy on the clove.

Anyway, this place was quite popular with the locals. I say still give them a shot, firstly because you don’t have many other choices in Hillsville and secondly because we didn’t get to try very many dishes.
