When we walked by and this tiny place was filled with customers I knew I had to try it out, I could see them making the tortillas through the window! The menu is in Spanish and I was a bit rusty but was happy with my order of a barbacoa taco (saucy pork) and a chicken tamale. Tacos come with onion, lettuce, tomato, plus guacamole and a selection of freshly made salsas and lime. They also offer carnitas (pork), chicken, fish, chorizo and tongue tacos. They sell the filling by the pound as well which I bet makes amazing bag lunches when you buy their tortillas.

We came here for a delicious brunch, even though I was equally tempted by the lure of a live band and a tasty looking bar menu had we come here in the evening instead. Eggs Benedict are always a good measuring stick item for me to order and these did not disappoint. The tangy rich sauce was perfect and unlike most benedicts, this one came with potatoes, toast, meat AND some fruit. My husband got the low carb “Eggs Jenny” which was a Benedict on top of a portabella mushroom instead of bread. My sis enjoyed the appropriately-named “ginormous” french toast with berries and whipped cream, and her beau liked his Guinness omelet which included Irish cheddar, chicken and caramelized onions. Overall I don’t think we could have been much happier, dining in the classic atmosphere of the ex-hotel.

It’s always awesome to find a place like this when we visit a new town, we wish we had an independent shop near us instead of starblech. Smedly’s has a unique menu – on one visit our group tried the yerba mate and a raspberry soda, and I also sampled a Berger cookie, Baltimore’s version of the black and white. On another visit we had some simple Greek yogurt with muesli. 5 stars for integrity of a comfy environment, including back patio, chalkboard walls and free wifi, as well as the amazing selection of fun foods.

I have real mixed feelings here. Our food was great but it was expensive due to the waitress not letting us know certain sides were not included with the meal. Also she completely neglected us at bill time. You wouldn’t think you should have trouble paying for a bill when there is a crowd waiting in the heat outside and only a tiny bit of space to monitor. But the captain crunch french toast was lovelier than it sounded, with wisps of whipped cream and berries. The sausage and eggs were perfect and homemade, the biscuit towered from the plate and melted in our mouths with butter and raspberry jam on top. Hubby enjoyed his mexican omelet with chorizo. I’d avoid the cinnamon bun (a mistake order), it was overly sugary without much depth.

I guess this place would be perfect with a bigger space more attentive service. But they’re getting along fine without it. If you don’t feel like waiting perhaps go in and order a pricey ($7) smoothie to go.

My sister is in love with Pitango and took me on a recent trip to Baltimore. I do agree, it is quite tasty. A bit expensive ($8 for a small gelato and a cappuccino), but you are paying for fresh and organic ingredients – imported pistachios and hazelnuts and free range eggs, etc. I liked my half chocolate hazelnut half “crema”, which is a creamy vanilla flavor. Sis’s Pennsylvania strawberry flavor was also delightful and the dark chocolate had deep winey chocolate flavor. But I’ll need to go back and try some more of the unique flavors like espresso or banana to definitively award another star. Or the Afogato: “The ultimate desert-snack-energy-booster, afogato combines espresso with a dollop of hazelnut or chocolate gelato.” See you again soon, Sis!
